How deep/How hot

One big question that followed us around the country was on our opinions of the moral divide. Many of the people we interviewed asked us what we thought about the pervasiveness of the split, and the depth of the division socially and politically. My answer has evolved considerably since we began Seeing Red. I thought like lots of folks that there was a “scary” space growing between red and blue America, but we heard from plenty of people that compared to say, the Civil War, we aren’t terribly divided at all.

So the real answer for me is another question… Do you think that the divide we are living through today is a “moment in time” thing, or the beginning of a pervasive, ever widening split that eventually cleaves the country in two? And what about the splits within groups? The other favorite question we encountered, and asked ourselves was “who’s going to hell.” This is the signal question of the divide within Christianity. To many, the answer is if you’re saved, you go to Heaven no matter your “performance” hear on Earth. Not saved, then it’s the Fiery Lake, no matter your good deeds in this life.

Can you believe we talked about this stuff for nearly two years, almost non-stop???
