The Filming of Seeing Red
Most of the story behind our story that appears on our website has to do with the ideas that drove our movie, and how those ideas got hammered into a finished (almost?) product by four very different people during almost two years of work. Here are some of the nuts and bolts facts that represent to "how" behind the ideas…
- Seeing Red was entirely paid for by us, except for one $25 donation from Karen, who drives Bus 23. (And Gerry's mom of course, but she is "us")
- We used 121 tapes to record 110 hours of footage.
- We used two Panasonic AG-DVX100a cameras, but only rarely were the two cameras in the same location. Oh well…
- We logged tape onto an Avid editing system for our "working cut," re-logged onto Final Cut Pro by Alex our editor, and re-re-logged to continue developing the permanent (maybe) cut onto the Avid system.
- The total of miles flown to get to and from our locations is around 75,000, including one trip from China to Houston, and from Houston to Chile.
- We logged around 8000 driving miles, including an overnight trip from Berkley to Seattle for Leah and Gerry. He slept at least one of the 13 driving hours behind the wheel.
- We have 66 signed release forms, almost all of them legible.
- Almost none of the people who we requested interviews from said no. All of our interviewees were cold calls, except for one old professor, and a mother-in-law.
- Not a single person requested to be paid.
- Most everyone offered us food.
- It was always good, especially down south. And we can now recommend a great Indonesian restaurant in Oakland, CA thanks to George Lakoff.
- We talked about our own faith almost constantly when together, and yes, Gerry was really "saved" during the early months of filming. Elon was saddened that it couldn't have been a bit more dramatic; "Couldn't you have gone up the aisle and flopped into a kiddie pool?" was his question.
